How to geek out, with yarn
angels, fly
angel_grace01
I've always been a bit cooky. I like geeky stuff. And let me tell you, there's not a lot of Trek-related geekiness in my country. Plenty of Star Wars related stuff, though. ::shudders:: So, I have to get my own geek on.

Behold the extend of my nerdiness:

Randomness: I've been a slasher all my life...
angels, fly
angel_grace01

Earlier this week, it hit me: I've been a slasher all my life. I just didn't realise it. Go figure!
I just wanted to share this not earth shattering revelation with the world. Now what's gonna follow is a lot of rambling, so don't feel obliged to read on.

So here I am, an undefined number of years later, still looking for the slashiness in day-to-day life. I think I'm actually a better person for it. I'm not from the most open-minded background (tiny village, religious family on my father's side), but fandom has given me the perspective to say: who cares? I'm not going to dictate what's normal, because that's all relative anyway. I'm gonna finish now, with this quote from the Sherlock Holmes story The Three Garridebs: "It was worth a wound–it was worth many wounds–to know the depth of loyalty and love which lay behind that cold mask."

In the end, isn't love in all its infinite mutations worth it?

Downloading, installing and customising Calibre
angels, fly
angel_grace01

Calibre is just about the best thing to organise libraries (in my humble opinion). It’s safe, multi-functional, relatively easy to use once you learn your way around it (that’s what these posts are for LOL), it’s constantly being improved and best of all, it’s free!

To some, this will probably seem like a rather long-winded explanation for something that’s a pretty easy process. Feel free to skip parts, I’m just trying to be thorough. Things you really should read will be bold. If the portable version requires something different/extra, it will be in green italics. Read moreCollapse )

Getting offline
angels, fly
angel_grace01
I've promised a lot of people to publish about Calibre and e-readers. I figure I'm going to be be systematic about it: first get the fic, then organise it and finally put it on your reader. So, this is the first part.

The following list discusses different means of getting content (which means your favourite stories LOL) offline. I know there are many other ways out there. If you know of a different/better method, please let me know. I'm always eager to learn. ^-^

Here's what I've got for now:

1) Copy+Paste
2) Save as HTML
3) Print to PDF
4) Squee!book
5) FLAG
6) Fanficdownloader
7) Download from site
8) Internet Archive/Wayback Machine

Spiced Peaches

angel_grace01
Now, I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a big Spock/McCoy fan. It's honestly not something I go looking for, but I'll read just about anything that's well-written. This being said, there are some very good writers out there. And yes, some do write in the S/Mc fandom. One of the first places to look for decent stories is in an online zine called 'Spiced Peaches'. They've been around for a while now, and still publish issues now and then. Unfortunately, finding a list of all issues to date is very hard. So, I figured I'd make it a bit easier. LOL.
Bear in mind I rarely stray from the K/S path, so if any of these links stop working, I'll probably won't notice unless you tell me.

Fill in the blanks with your own story!!!!! LOL

Keeping my promise, just veeeeerrrrrrryyyyyyy slowly
angels, fly
angel_grace01
Hello everyone!

No, I haven't forgotten that I've promised to write about fanfic and e-readers. Unfortunately, being the slightly OC person that I am, I'm checking my facts and discovering that some stuff doesn't work (anymore). What's more, I've rewritten the bloody thing four times already! I keep either writing myself into a fraggin' corner or losing the entire kit 'n caboodle! Of course, it doesn't help that I'm going to Kismet next month (YAY!!!!!) and someone (I'm looking at you now tracionn  LOL) reminded me of the stuff I used to make with gel paints. Most has been lost or destroyed, but I'm feverishly trying to rekindle the vibe. So it's gonna be a little while longer before you get the promised post.

Still, here's a little lit of fun to tide you over: the evil overlord list, also known as the 'Evil Overlord Handbook' (patent pending^-^): http://www.st-minutiae.com/humor/overlord.html
I never knew this thing had its roots in the Star Trek 'verse until I wanted to show my cousin a copy and googled it.
I wonder if someone ever wrote K/S fic inspired by it?

Until next time,
Angel Grace
